Stop the Rot

Brain Rot - the 2024 Oxford word of the year.

Brain rot is defined as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging. Also: something characterized as likely to lead to such deterioration”.

Why This Matters Now

First attributed to Hennry David Thoreau in Walden and written in 1854, Brain rot is not a new concept. In an era defined by social media, AI, and rapid technological acceleration, pausing to understand the underlying mechanisms—be they historical, social, or environmental—is an act of resistance. Brain Rot isn't just an abstract concept; it affects your daily life, your decisions, and the future of our communities. If, as Thomas Jefferson said, having a well informed electorate is crucial to democracy, then the brain rot inducing firehose of brain rot taking over the internet will surely make democracy an impossible undertaking.

We often accept these changes as inevitable progress. But technology is a series of choices made by humans. Too often we are making the wrong choices.
